What Are Helical Pier Foundation Supports?

Helical piers are deep foundation supports used to stabilize homes by transferring the weight of the structure to stable soil below. Installed beneath the foundation, they bypass weak surface soils and are typically advanced 10 to 30 feet deep until stable bearing is reached, stopping further movement.

During our inspection, we determine if movement is caused by soil conditions and whether deep stabilization is needed. When appropriate, we install helical piers to anchor the home to stable soil, preventing further settlement and restoring long-term stability.

Signs You Need Helical Pier Foundation Support

Foundation settlement often appears as cracking, separation, or movement along the exterior of the home as the soil beneath it shifts or compresses. These issues usually worsen over time and indicate the ground may no longer be supporting the structure properly.

Common signs include cracked foundation walls, stair-step cracks in brick or block, corners of the home settling, and porches or chimneys leaning or pulling away. You may also notice gaps around windows or doors going out of square—signs that deeper support may be needed to stop further movement.

What Causes Foundation Settlement?

Foundation settlement is often caused by moisture changes in the soil beneath the home. When the ground becomes saturated, it softens and loses its ability to support the structure. During drier periods, the soil can shrink or shift, creating uneven support that leads to movement over time.

In crawl space homes, poor drainage and excess moisture accelerate this process, weakening the soil and contributing to settlement, cracking, and structural movement if not properly stabilized.

How Helical Piers Fix The Problem

Helical piers fix foundation settlement by transferring the weight of the home past weak or shifting surface soils to deeper, stable ground. Installed beneath the foundation, they provide a solid bearing point that stops further movement and prevents ongoing settlement.

By anchoring the structure into stable soil, helical piers stabilize the affected area and help restore long-term support, eliminating the need to rely on unstable surface conditions.

How Are Helical Piers Installed?

Helical pier installation begins with a small excavation at the affected area to access the foundation footing. Using specialized equipment, the piers are then advanced into the ground until they reach stable soil at the required depth. A bracket is installed beneath the footing to transfer the weight of the home onto the piers.

Once installed, the system stabilizes the foundation and can allow for controlled lifting where appropriate. The area is then backfilled, leaving minimal disruption to the surrounding property.
